How did I get here? I keep thinking about my first day here. It was the year 2040 in an icey NYC and apartment rents were on the rise — moreso than ever. Sitting on the downtown Q line, the fans shut off, the lights dim low and I was stuck in an underground tunnel. As boredom set in, I started gazing at the advertisements atop the seats across from me. Very simply, it said “The Amazon” along the entire banner. No website, contact information, or anything.
I got to work 10 minutes late that day because of the train delay and my boss was furious. I was a software engineer at Amazon and my boss, Gerrard, was kind of an asshole. Since the stock market crash of 2035 Amazon had pretty much taken over the world. As Gerrard walked away, I started chatting with my neighboring coworkers about this “The Amazon” thing I saw on the subway that morning but nobody had heard of it.
I did some research online and discover Amazon just announced that they’re opening up a high tech city in what used to be Newark. There are no taxes, just pay you’re Prime membership and it’s free. But what’s the catch? It all sounded to good to be true. After doing some more research, they want us to get this new spacial audio implant in so you can better interact with the city. But that’s really it.
